This has been a very long day, please pardon my language…I am very angry, but I’m going to sleep now. There is much more for us, as a community, to talk about. I think we can agree that there are some serious problems here and I’m confident that, soon, we’ll have the information we need to…
I’ve watched this unfold, and I have researched past allegations. Apparently there are abusers in Nerdfighteria, and apparently others are surprised/shocked/saddened. I don’t want to minimize those emotions in any way, but I do hope to provide you a bit of perspective. Nationally a woman’s odds of being sexually assaulted are 1 in 5. To put this in perspective, when my female friends and I get together for a Saturday night of board games & cocktails, it is an accepted & verified fact that two of the women sitting in that room have been raped.
You see, this isn’t a Nerdfighteria problem. It’s a human problem. Let’s go seemingly slightly off-topic & then loop back around, shall we? I’ve been researching the horror of sexual slavery lately. I know that it happens, that it’s depraved, etc. What I cannot understand is why there is a market to purchase these women. Who is utilizing the services these women are forced to provide?! So I asked my (sweet, wonderful) boyfriend that question. His answer? “Kait, the sad truth is, of all the men in the world at least half would consider engaging in the sex slave industry.” He theorized that it could be an animalistic need to be dominate. We really don’t know. Whether all of this conjecture has any basis in reality is of course debatable. The scope of the sex slave industry however, is not.
Which brings to me to this point— the larger Nerdfighteria gets, the more predators we’re going to have in our midst. It brings me no small amount of sadness that this is the truth. However, I’ve experienced it in my own life, on a very small scale. The more people I know, the longer I am alive, the more abusers & predators I come across.
You see, sexual abuse is a societal reality. So what can we do? What are Hank & John responsible for? Those two questions are related. Hank & John are responsible to the community they’ve built to defend victims (and let’s remain gender-neutral here, as it affects all of us), renounce abusers, and set an example to strive for. They do this with excellence. We as a community— and as a world — can continue to fight rape culture, surround victims with love, and disassociate ourselves from those who perpetuate violence up others for ANY reason. (I don’t care if you have a popular YouTube channel. I care if you’re a horrible person or not.)
